Breath of Fresh Air: Feature Articles
Chapter 39: Where can I find special allergy-proof wraps for my bed?
You may have been told by your doctor — or other health advisor — that you should avoid dust. If your asthma or other allergies are made worse by exposure to dust, the best treatment is to reduce your exposure, especially in the bedroom.
In another section of this book (Feature Articles, Chapter 12), we discussed how the allergic particles in dust collect in the mattress, box springs, and pillows of your bed. A very effective way to trap this allergic material inside the mattress, box springs, and pillows and prevent it from getting into the air is to seal these bed components in plastic, zippered, allergy-proof wraps. Sheets and pillow cases can be used on top of the plastic wraps; washing the sheets and pillow cases in hot water kills the dust mites that accumulate on the surface.
Many patients have wondered where they might find these frequently recommended allergy-proof wraps for their beds. We have assembled a list of local (and national) suppliers in the hope that one obstacle to obtaining these wraps — that is, not knowing where to find them — can be eliminated. This list is not meant to include all possible sources of these materials, nor is it an endorsement of these particular suppliers.
